“Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
Let it be done to me according to your word.’
Then the angel departed from her.”
(Luke 1:38)
Dear Friends –
Whatever God asks of us, however severe or demanding His request, could we be so quick to respond as Mary did and reply: “Okay God, whatever you want, I’m totally yours. Take my life and use it as You wish.” I think most of us wouldn’t be quite so ready to answer without a delay of: “Let me think about it,” or “I need more details.” To go blindly forth, without hesitation as Mary did, comes from the perfect faith He blessed her with making her His most perfect human creation, declaring her to be without the stain of original sin. It was announced by the Angel Gabriel, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.” (Luke 1:28) Mary was chosen by God to be the Mother of His Son, therefore only the purest of vessels was required and prepared to house and nurture the growth of Divinity. One of the most telling descriptions in the argument of God being anything but a tyrannical dictator is in the approach He took with Mary; He didn’t order or deceive her with silent impregnation, but lovingly asked her to knowingly allow the Holy Spirit to miraculously act accordingly, and she equally and immediately returned that love with “Let it be done.” Mary, being schooled by her parents in Biblical history, was well aware of all the prophecies that foretold the coming of a Messiah. Thus, when Gabriel announces to her that she was going to participate in The Savior’s birth as the Mother of God’s Son, the enormity of cooperating with The Father’s Will, to her was undoubtedly the greatest compliment possible! Mary had no clear vision of what the future might hold, or what her role as Mother to Jesus would entail, but she had unshakeable trust in Almighty God. She must have been overjoyed at the prospect of being chosen by God for this singularly epic event in all of history, so much so, that she immediately goes in haste to her cousin Elizabeth.
Elizabeth, now six months miraculously pregnant with John the Baptist, “was filled with the Holy Spirit; and she cried out with a loud voice: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord” (Luke 1:41-42,45) Mary replied with “The Magnificat” which is a beautiful Christian prayer repeated worldwide daily. "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For He has looked upon His handmaid's lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His name. His mercy is from age to age to those who fear Him. He has shown might with His arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry He has filled with good things; the rich He has sent away empty. He has helped Israel his servant, remembering His mercy, according to His promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever." (Luke 1:46-55)
While God The Father chose Mary to be the mother of His Son, Jesus chose Mary to be the mother of the world when He assigned that task to her at the foot of the cross. Mary has certainly taken on that responsibility with tremendous fervor making apparitions all around the world displaying the reality and power assigned her to enlighten all to the rightful life as God’s child. She listens with a Mother’s heart to the payers and pleas sent her way, guides the lost to The Blessed Trinity, and continues to reinforce that Jesus is the only Way, Truth, and Life for us all. Chosen daughter of The Father, beloved Mother of The Son, and bride of The Holy Spirit… you cannot go wrong believing and imploring her help with all that power behind her… she loves you as do They. If Mary were to ask you this Christmas to give birth and nurture Christ in another human being, would “Let it be done” be your quick response?
BELIEVE IN THE IMPOSSIBLE
God had repeatedly done the impossible in the Old Testament (O.T.) with the most significant proving His control over the natural world He created, as in the Great Flood that destroyed creation except for Noah and company. Also, He parted the Red Sea for the Israelites who were on foot, to escape through and then brought the sea back down on the pursuing evil Egyptians. Christ was awakened by the apostles who thought they were perishing in a storm-battered boat, and He arose and rebuked the wind and sea and it was perfectly calm, stupefying the apostles completely. Many barren women in the O.T. conceived a child after imploring The Holy Spirit, with the greatest conception being that of God’s own Son to Mary Immaculate. Mary herself demonstrated the ability to do the impossible many times through apparitions even making the sun “dance” at Fatima… and yet, with all this powerful supernatural ability of impossibility portrayed time after time, unbelievers still exist.
Part of the unbelievers’ problem is that they stay fixated on the natural and never transpose it to the symbolic supernatural, leaving those events to strictly historical record and irrelevant to the current… how grievous their error. Take, for example, the Marriage at Cana where Christ performed His first miracle, at the request of Mary by the way, and where His public ministry began as Savior of the world. Reading the account in the second chapter of John, an unbeliever could simply take this as a tale of Christ using His divine powers to relieve His friends of the humiliation of running out of wine at a wedding banquet. But, oh no, it is so much more than that… in fact, this is one of the most important theologically packed accountings in The Bible. A marriage indicates the union of two, and in this case, is symbolically the wedding of heaven and earth; Divinity and humanity are now joined in the flesh, no longer invisible as in the past. Mary knows exactly who her Son is, and while they both were invited guests, she strongly feels the necessity to alleviate this disastrous turn of events and prods her Son into action. The guests having no wine, represents Israel and the whole world sinfully dissipating without devotion to God, only self; Mary knows that is why the Messiah must make Himself known to reverse this downward spiral and bring the knowledge of God and salvation to mankind. Jesus relents to Mary’s pleading and changes the jugs of water into superb wine. We are like those jugs of water… living a natural life by the attributes received from the genetic combination of our parents. Jesus is symbolically showing us He can enhance our plain life into one of more spirited existence with all the zestful and intoxicating elements represented by wine. God can shower us with His graces to enhance every single moment of our existence. Whether it is Israel, the world, our family, or each individual existence, alone only so much can be accomplished which tends to the sinful without God’s inclusion; but, with God, as His child, His nation, the impossible can be accomplished to provide us better existence… no other way to get it… only God is God to bring about the impossible.
