“He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
(Luke 4:18-19)
Dear Friends –
God promised, through Jesus uttering those words above, that a time of miracles had come… a year of the Lord’s favor. Can you imagine being a listener in the Synagogue that day they first heard those words spoken centuries ago… what hope and joy they must have given to desperate souls that had long been praying for release. And yet, centuries later, how many of us really understand that those words are still very relevant and absolutely positively true for each and every one of us Christians that proclaim Almighty God, Our Father… the Lord’s favor is ours, not just for a year but always... as long as we choose to remain His child. Anytime, anywhere and for any reason, we can go to Him and ask for His help in being released from enslavement of one kind or another, in being helped to cast off the chains of oppression inflicted by all sorts of wrong authority, and especially that He would please increase our ability to believe in Him and see Divine Providence working in our lives at all times… always to desire and recognize His favor.
The normal analysis of scripture by Church Fathers is to emphasize a supernatural interpretation of events, presenting a more figurative picture to the literal occurrences. When Christ cured the blind, emphasis was placed on those blind to God’s truth being given spiritual vision to know and understand Him; while lepers were cured of a horrific disease, they were more so symbolically eradicated of the deadly sins that were quickly eroding their life to eternal death; and where demons were extracted, that was the penchant of devilish ways controlling every aspect of their self-absorbed life being thoroughly removed. While the supernatural cures are definitely more significant, because they are the ones that help us attain heaven, let us never forget that Jesus actually did the literal… He did give sight to the blind, He did give hearing to the deaf, He did make the lame walk and so much more and all in the natural. Besides the bodily cures He administered, recall the time Jesus stopped the wind and sea from violently tossing the Apostles’ boat around… think on the tremendous power that He has which can control all the elements of nature… that should just amaze and overwhelm us! And what about the time His extreme unhappiness with the barren fig tree made Him put it to death, instantly! In the natural or supernatural, Almighty God has the miraculous power over all of His creation… so when The Bible repeats time after time, “Nothing shall be impossible for God,” why is that so hard for us to believe?
Certainly, we don’t see instant miracles happen today as they did when Jesus walked the earth, but non-the-less, miracles do happen everyday but in hidden ways seen only by His children that recognizes that He often works through the normal course of events; behind the scenes, He masterminds an occurrence of Divine favor. Never hesitate to ask your Heavenly Father to favor you with His powerful abilities in the natural as well as the supernatural. This time of year as the calendar rolls over to a New Year, our minds are abuzz with new hopes, desires and resolutions; we are ready to say goodbye to bad habits, goals set aside, and misfortune of one kind or another we never want to revisit, so we slam the door closed on the old with great expectations for a new beginning. However, examine those failures and determine whether or not you were trying to accomplish them on your own merits and without God’s help… perhaps another try this year, but this time with much prayer for His intercession. You want success to quit smoking, lose weight or anything else, natural or supernatural, ask and you will receive… He would love to give you, a year of His favor!
“The object of a new year
is not that we should have a new year,
but rather that we should have a new soul.”
G. K. Chesterton
New Year resolutions are usually made to change a negative in ourselves, or they might be to acquire things and goals, long desired but yet unattained. Change of a calendar date sparks us into self-examination for a time of betterment away from the ruts we fall into with such ease. When our soul is at peace, all these other things are less important; resolve to improve your inner character that sets you right before Almighty God, and then, the season of peace will remain in your soul the whole year through.
JOURNALING WITH ALMIGHTY GOD
I know the idea of writing can be uncomfortable for some, so when a writer tells you to keep a journal, your first instinct might be revulsion… but hold on a moment and hear me through. Start out with a bound journal full of blank pages, or a spiral notebook or loose-leaf binder, whatever, format doesn’t matter, neither does spelling or grammar because no one is going to see it; this is strictly between you and God and He doesn’t care about misspelling, only the thoughts of your heart are dear to Him.
Often times a private notion pops into your head during a public discussion that you keep to yourself, but it pesters you in the back of your mind until you resolve it… like a noticed loose thread you either pull it out or weave it back in. But some thoughts take a lot of pondering; one day you see one aspect while the next time it crosses your thoughts, a whole new side to the matter comes out… what to do? Write! I relate so well to the words of poet W.H. Auden, “How do I know what I think until I write it.” It’s as if all these aspects are floating out there in the universe that you pull in momentarily and then send back out again… put them on paper and they take form… the inked words are concrete images of the abstract that you can rearrange, strikeout, add to and so on until a solid concept has taken shape! During your morning meditation, Bible study class, or a preacher’s sermon, a bit of scripture doesn’t quite make sense, even just one line can stand out as confusing… so you jot it down with a few lines asking God to help you untangle the bewilderment. Always date your entries and review them occasionally for you never know when God is going to “speak” an answer to you in ways that will absolutely amaze you. It can be as simple as accidentally turning to a Bible passage that gives you clarification; an inspiration jumps into your mind from nowhere, and it’s just the solution you need; a magazine crosses your path with exactly the info you need; or some person, TV personality or shopkeeper will utter a statement to someone else that seems said directly to you and while those words sting your ears, you just know right then and there, that’s God getting an answer to you! Don’t close your mind to such possibilities for with firm belief, God will find some way to reach you… watch and listen for it, because He is definitely not going to give you stone tablets with answers, or appear to you in the quiet of your garden, but He will reach you, He promised.
Write as often as you can, daily, weekly, spur of the moment, whatever works for you. You can start the morning with: Dear God, stay with me during my interview today, put your words in my mouth, and please keep my knees from knocking! At the end of the day: Dear God, my son had a miserable day at school… was it his fault… what can I do? Give God a weekly update on your spiritual growth from your perspective, and where you think you need His help in the upcoming week. Never forget to give Him a Thank You in these writings when everything goes super well from His help. Share everything with Him, in your mind, and on paper… He loves to hear from you… and He is superb at answering communications.
